Sense Awards 2024: Person of the Year

Video with BSL and audio description

Jamie Thompson

Jamie’s volunteering at the local gym, helping two other visually impaired people to work out, is learning to play the guitar, to cook and dance.

Jamie is blind and has learning disabilities. He’s been supported by Sense for most of his life, but has recently made huge strides in his life, learning new skills and setting new goals for himself.

Twice a week support staff take Jamie to his favourite place, the local gym, where he’s become the gym’s first ever volunteer, supporting two other visually impaired people to work out.

Descriptive transcript of Jamie's video

Jamie is a man with short brown hair and red sunglasses. He shakes up and sprays a bottle of champagne outside surrounded by a group of people. There’s cheering and whistling from the crowd.

There’s a white flash and a member of Sense staff opens a door, announcing Jamie.

I’d like to welcome the Person of the Year 2024, our Jamie!!!

Jamie walks through the door holding his trophy. Cheers and shouting from everyone in the room.

Confetti cannons spray Jamie with colourful paper. Jamie hugs a member of scent staff and other people in the room.

Voices from the crowd: Oh wow. Well deserved.

Jamie: I feel great

Voices from the crowd: everyone is an emotional mess

Voices from the crowd: Go Jamie!! Yeah man.

Voices from the crowd: Well done mate. Well deserved.
