Sense has helped families find fun and meaning in sensory play. Hear their stories and how you can get involved!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Touch and texture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Catching up with Philippa, Logan\u2019s mum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Logan has cerebral palsy and brain damage, as well as limited hearing and vision. Objects of reference help Logan anticipate when we\u2019re about to do any one of these activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For dinner time, we\u2019ll give Logan his favourite spoon. He\u2019ll feel it and we\u2019ll tap it against his mouth so he knows what\u2019s happening. Then he\u2019s got a rubber duck for bath time. Some references are quite simple and logical\u2026other ones are a bit more obscure! The lady who comes in to give him a massage, her object of reference is some bits of material plaited together because she has dreadlocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These new ways of communicating, which Sense introduced us to, have been a real lifeline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-grey-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Game: Guess the character from the object<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each person must think of a character. This can be from a book, game, film or a real-life celebrity. Who you\u2019ve picked is a secret and it\u2019s up to everyone else to guess who it is! As clues, bring three objects along for everyone to see, touch or taste.<br>If you\u2019re guessing, you can only ask 20 \u2018yes\u2019 or \u2018no\u2019 questions. If you think you know who it is, shout \u201cSense!\u201d and give your answer. The first person to get it right wins that round!<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sound and feeling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Meet Libby\u2019s mum, Kirsty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/image3-edited-rotated.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10073\" width=\"220\" height=\"294\" \/><figcaption>Libby enjoying the sensations of lying under musical chimes.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Music means a lot to my 4 years old daughter, Libby. She has Bohring Opitz Syndrome, which affects her sight and hearing. Her love of music keeps us busy exploring new ways of creating and experiencing sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Libby loves a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Xsa8w82xPsQ\">resonance board<\/a>. The vibrations encourage her to move different parts of her body, so it\u2019s a way she can get to know herself and her surroundings. We\u2019ve borrowed a board from Sense and it\u2019s inspired us to keep experimenting. Libby loves the sound of clanking bells and beads, or just banging wooden spoons!<br><br>Sense\u2019s sessions have helped Libby\u2019s communication and movements really improve. It\u2019s amazing to see her grow.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Game: Guess the song<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nominate someone as the performer. Their role is to pick a well-known song or rhyme and play it for everyone else to guess! Use pots and pans, wooden spoons, teacups and whatever else comes to hand. You can bang objects to make sound or use someone\u2019s arm or back to tap out the rhythm for them to guess. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/conditions\/charge-syndrome\/\">CHARGE syndrome<\/a> hasn\u2019t gotten in the way of her finding magic in every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My granddaughter is deaf. She has some vision, which she puts to great use. She\u2019s very engaged with the world around her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bethany loves craft activities, the messier the better! A big one is biscuit decorating. Whenever this is on at our Sense centre, she always has a strong vision of what she wants to create \u2013 the colours and sweet decorations, she chooses it all very independently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, we\u2019ve seen Bethany\u2019s confidence continue to grow. It\u2019s clear she gets a lot out of her sensory sessions.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-grey-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Game: Cupcake design competition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your cupcake competition can be carried out on paper or on real cakes \u2013 whichever option works best for you. Participants will need to create a sensational cupcake, one with different toppings, textures and flavours!
