They have a wide range of skills and experience working with children and young people who are deafblind\/multi-sensory impaired.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/our-services\/support-for-children\/support-for-children-who-are-deafblind\/\">Find out&nbsp;more about the specialist support we offer to children.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"SEND\">Special educational needs and disabilities support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), or have a child with SEND, support is available in nurseries, at school and in college, including communication support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think your child may have SEND, contact the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/get-support\/information-and-advice\/communication\/communication-support\/#ECSP\">Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDco)\/Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENco)<\/a>&nbsp;in your child\u2019s school or nursery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your child is not in a school or nursery, contact your local council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\">Find your local council, using your postcode.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/children-with-special-educational-needs\/special-educational-needs-support\">Find out more about support for children under 5, and children aged 5\u201315, on the government website.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are 16 or over and planning to go into further education, contact the college before you start to make sure it can meet your needs. Both roles are basically the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SENDco\/SENco is the schoolteacher responsible for assessing, planning and monitoring the progress of children with SEND.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Qualified Teacher of Children and Young People with a Vision Impairment (QTVI)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A qualified teacher with an additional qualification for children with a vision impairment, working with learners aged 0\u201325 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Specialist Teaching Assistant (STA)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An STA offers support in learning new skills, gaining independence, getting more involved and making sure that educational materials are fully accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Speech and Language Therapist (SALT)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A health professional trained to support children who may have difficulties with the development of language and communication skills (as well as feeding and swallowing difficulties).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Portage Worker<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A portage worker provides home visits for pre-school children under five years who have SEND and their families, working to develop play, communication, relationships and learning. They sometimes work closely with other agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all areas of the UK offer portage and services vary from area to area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out if you can get portage in your area, and for more information,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.portage.org.uk\/\">visit the National Portage Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Sense Specialist Services for Children and Young People<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At Sense, we have a team of specialist teachers of multi-sensory impairment (QTMSI) and MSI practitioners with a wide range of skills and experience working with children and young people who are deafblind\/multi-sensory impaired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/our-services\/support-for-children\/support-for-children-who-are-deafblind\/\">Find out&nbsp;more about the support we offer to children and young people.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"plans\">Education, health and care plans<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/childhood-and-school\/send-education-special-education-needs-disabilities\/education-health-and-care-plans\/\">education, health and care plan (EHCP)<\/a> is for children and young people up to the age of 25 who need more support than they get through SEND support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\">ask&nbsp;your local authority<\/a>&nbsp;to carry out an assessment if you think your child needs an&nbsp;EHCP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re aged 16\u201325, you can ask for an assessment yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone else who thinks an assessment is necessary can ask for one, including doctors, health visitors, teachers and family friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may also be able to get a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/benefits-and-money\/who-pays-for-your-care-and-support\/personal-budgets\/\">personal budget<\/a> for your child if they have an EHCP or have been told they need one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/children-with-special-educational-needs\/extra-SEN-help\">Find out more about EHCPs and personal budgets on the government website.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sense also offers support with the EHCP process, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Attending educational meetings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working with other professionals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Providing specialist advice to help you get access to the right learning environments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out how we can help you,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/contact-us\/\">get in touch with us<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block  slab    is-style-textured-grey-tint-10  align-full\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">  <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"local\">Local Offer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each local authority (council) must have a Local Offer for children and young people with SEND, including those who don\u2019t have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/get-support\/information-and-advice\/communication\/communication-support\/#plans\">EHCPs<\/a>, and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Local Offer should set out in one place all information about what education, training, health and social care support is available for children and young people with SEND.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\">Find your local council using your postcode.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find your Local Offer page, search the internet using the name of your local authority plus the words \u201cLocal Offer\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/councilfordisabledchildren.org.uk\/resources\/all-resources\/filter\/inclusion-send\/local-offer-guide\">Download the Council for Disabled Children\u2019s Local Offer Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"allowance\">Disabled Students\u2019 Allowance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Disabled Students\u2019 Allowance (DSA) is support to cover study-related costs you might have because of a disability (as well as a long-term illness or mental health problem).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A DSA can cover the cost of specialist equipment or British Sign Language interpreters or specialist notetakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more about DSAs in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/disabled-students-allowance-dsa\">England<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentfinanceni.co.uk\/types-of-finance\/undergraduate\/part-time\/northern-ireland-student\/extra-help\/disabled-students-allowance\/what-is-it\/\">Northern Ireland<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.saas.gov.uk\/guides\/dsa\">Scotland<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentfinancewales.co.uk\/postgraduate-finance\/doctoral\/what-s-available\/disabled-students-allowance\/\">Wales<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-secondary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Further education<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>DSAs aren\u2019t available for further education. Colleges and schools should provide what\u2019s needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Different schools and colleges provide different amounts of support \u2013 check with your school or college about what\u2019s available.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"workplace\">In the workplace<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have a disability or health condition that makes it hard for you to do your job, your employer must make and pay for changes \u2013 called \u201creasonable adjustments\u201d \u2013 to support you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your employer must do this under the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/equality-act-2010-guidance\">Equality Act 2010<\/a>&nbsp;to make sure you are not put at a \u201csubstantial disadvantage\u201d in work compared to people who do not have a disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access to Work scheme<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need further support on top of these reasonable adjustments, you can apply for an Access to Work grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Access to Work grant could help pay for any assistive technology or support from a communication professional, including British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters, lipspeakers, notetakers, speech-to-text reporters and interpreters for people who are deafblind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you live in England, Scotland or Wales, you can find out more about Access to Work and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/access-to-work\">apply on the government website<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/articles\/access-work-practical-help-work\">Find out more about Access to Work in Northern Ireland.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choosing a registered communication professional&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When you are looking for help from a communication professional, always make sure you choose one who is registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find out if a communication professional is registered, check with the organisations below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcpd.org.uk\/\">National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thescottishregister.co.uk\/\">Scottish Association of Sign Language Interpreters (SASLI)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block  slab    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10  align-full\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">  <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"public\">When using public services<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In England, Scotland and Wales, under the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/equality-act-2010-guidance\">Equality Act 2010<\/a>, service providers must take steps to make sure you get communication support, including assistive technology, and information in accessible formats from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Banks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cinemas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Caf\u00e9s, restaurants, pubs and shops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Courts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy companies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Government departments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Museums and galleries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>NHS services.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Television providers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilityjustice.org.uk\/learn-more-and-take-action\/accessible-information-and-communication-discrimination-guide\/\"><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.disabilityjustice.org.uk\/learn-more-and-take-action\/accessible-information-and-communication-discrimination-guide\/\">The&nbsp;Disability Justice Project has more information<\/a>.
