But we all lipread to some extent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you use hearing aids, you won\u2019t always follow everything that people are saying. That\u2019s when lipreading can help, whether you\u2019ve had hearing loss for years or are newly diagnosed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can help you stay connected to your family, friends and loved ones, and the world in general. It can help with your personal relationships, social life, workplace and career opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-grey-tint-10  size-medium\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Before you read on\u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li><strong>You can communicate using a mix of different ways. (We all do!)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>At Sense, we use whatever combination of speech, touch, sign or visual language works best.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It\u2019s never too late to start.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Have a go and don\u2019t worry about getting it wrong.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to learn lipreading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lipreading classes are the best way to learn. If you go to a lipreading class run by a qualified teacher, you\u2019ll:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Learn more quickly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feel more confident about communicating with others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learn more about managing your hearing loss.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feel more independent because you won\u2019t need to rely on others to follow conversations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lipreading classes are informal, friendly and relaxed. Use muted movies and TV, your reflection in a mirror and in social situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ATLA has also produced a DVD, \u2018Look Hear: Introduction to Lipreading\u2019, for practice at home. To find out more, email: <strong><a href=\"mailto:shop@atlalipreading.org.uk\">shop@atlalipreading.org.uk<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Top tips for lipreading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-grey-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you lipread:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Before you start talking with someone, tell them that you lipread.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find somewhere to speak with good lighting \u2013 not too dim and not too glaring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sit or stand at the same level as the person you\u2019re speaking with.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get yourself in a good position where you can clearly see the lips, facial expressions and gestures of the person you\u2019re speaking with.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ask the person to face the light, with their head up, looking directly at you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before the conversation starts, make sure you both know what you are going to talk about.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s OK to ask someone to repeat what they said, or to say it differently, if you didn\u2019t catch it first time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lipreading works best for speaking with one person or a small group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Take plenty of breaks. Lipreading can be tiring.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you\u2019re speaking with someone who lipreads:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Sit or stand at the same level as the person who lipreads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Face the light, with your head up, looking directly at the person who lipreads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure the person can see your face \u2013 don\u2019t smoke, eat or cover your mouth with your hand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before the conversation starts, make sure you both know what you are going to talk about.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Speak clearly and talk a little slower, but not too slowly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use your normal lip movements \u2013 don\u2019t exaggerate them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use your normal facial expressions and gestures to support what you\u2019re saying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be ready, if asked, to repeat what you\u2019ve said or to try saying it in a different way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use plain language, be direct and get to the point.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s OK to check with the person that they\u2019re following what you\u2019re saying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box
