At the same time, there are now 4,630 children with MSI in England, an increase of 21% on 2021. <\/strong>The number of MSI teachers has clearly not risen to meet this demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caroline believes that Thomas\u2019s communication would progress faster if he were given full-time one-to-one support at school from a suitably qualified BSL user with deafblind awareness training, but their requests have been refused.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-acf-row alignfull\">\n\t\t<div class=\"wrap\">\n\t\n\t<div class=\"wp-block-acf-row__inner\"> \n\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-acf-row-item  \"> \n  <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"2277\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Thomas-with-his-mum-Caroline-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Thomas is sat on Caroline's lap, and she is sat on the floor. He has a designated MSI teacher, but she covers many schools and has a responsibility to monitor him at least once a term.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n<\/div> \n<\/div>\n\n<\/div> \n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Caroline spoke to us &#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Thomas is happy at primary school and has fun playing in the sand. But I worry he\u2019s not really learning anything meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The children in his class are all hearing. They acknowledge him and wave and smile, but they can\u2019t sign to him using BSL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most of his time at school, there are no signers with him who could teach him using BSL. He\u2019s in a special school and the teachers there are all amazing \u2013 but I fear that they can\u2019t meet his needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The problem is that the existing system is completely flawed. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Thomas is assessed, he qualifies for the maximum level of sensory service and MSI support within his local authority, and that sounds like, \u2018Wow! We sign with Thomas and, even though he\u2019s not completely proficient, we try to teach him more. Once he started learning, he began telling us about his day for the first time, signing that he\u2019s going to school or communicating his needs \u2013 like he feels hungry or wants a cuddle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also discovered that Thomas loves dogs. When we meet one in the park or in the street, he\u2019ll make the sign for dog, and I know he wants to say hello. <strong>Making it possible for him to communicate like this is so important.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve tried and failed to get Thomas more one-to-one support at school so he can progress, to the point I felt it was hopeless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"595\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Thomas-1024x595.jpg\" alt=\"Thomas is stood, holding his dads hand for balance. They specialise in MSI. He would have a peer group \u2013 but trying to get him in there will be very, very difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if Thomas doesn\u2019t get a place, it will have to be homeschooling when he gets to high school.
