{"id":81984,"date":"2026-02-20T10:09:26","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T10:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/?p=81984"},"modified":"2026-03-13T13:40:19","modified_gmt":"2026-03-13T13:40:19","slug":"the-send-system-is-broken-it-feels-like-you-need-to-be-rich-to-be-disabled","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/blog\/the-send-system-is-broken-it-feels-like-you-need-to-be-rich-to-be-disabled\/","title":{"rendered":"The SEND system\u00a0is broken:\u00a0&#8220;It feels like you need to be rich to be disabled&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Navigating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/childhood-and-school\/send\/\">SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) system<\/a> has been a nightmare.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our family has had so many years of financial and\u00a0emotional shocks because the right support just isn\u2019t there.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My little boy,&nbsp;Azuriah, is&nbsp;such&nbsp;a smiley, bubbly&nbsp;child. He&nbsp;has complex needs, which means he needs to attend a special school&nbsp;covered by&nbsp;his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/childhood-and-school\/send\/ehcps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Education, Health and Care plan (EHCP)<\/a>.&nbsp;But it\u2019s taken a&nbsp;long&nbsp;time to&nbsp;reach&nbsp;this&nbsp;point, and the&nbsp;costs&nbsp;associated&nbsp;with his learning&nbsp;continue to put a real strain on our finances.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Azuriah_Thompson-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"Azuriah is in a green field, covered in brown leaves. However, families frequently report long delays, inconsistent decisions and costly, adversarial processes \u2013 leaving even children with the most complex needs without the help they are entitled to.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Originally,&nbsp;Azuriah&nbsp;was&nbsp;offered a place at another special school, but&nbsp;I&nbsp;had to turn it down because it was too far from home. Instead, while other children his age started school, he was&nbsp;allocated&nbsp;just an hour and a half a day at a local mainstream primary school that&nbsp;couldn\u2019t&nbsp;meet his needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During that disrupted year,&nbsp;he&nbsp;missed out on&nbsp;around 500 hours of education and made little progress. His limited school hours and the time&nbsp;I&nbsp;spent fighting for proper SEND support&nbsp;made it impossible for&nbsp;me&nbsp;to work&nbsp;at&nbsp;my job as an&nbsp;HR advisor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I make the sacrifices I do because&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;determined to do everything I can to support Azuriah\u2019s learning and help him make&nbsp;up for&nbsp;lost time.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three years on,&nbsp;I\u2019m&nbsp;still&nbsp;paying out of&nbsp;my&nbsp;own pocket for him to have four hours of therapy each weekend&nbsp;to make sure he doesn\u2019t fall behind at school&nbsp;again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last&nbsp;May,&nbsp;I&nbsp;was told his sessions must be delivered one-to-one because his behaviour can be challenging, increasing the cost to at least \u00a3140 a week, or \u00a37,280 a year. During school holidays,&nbsp;when&nbsp;his&nbsp;routine is disrupted, he needs extra sessions,&nbsp;which&nbsp;pushes the&nbsp;costs&nbsp;up again. It\u2019s not sustainable&nbsp;for me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Our research* found that 44% of the parents we surveyed had paid privately for therapies such as speech and language therapy, physiotherapy or occupational therapy for their disabled child with complex needs. Some months&nbsp;I end up paying more because whenever there\u2019s an adjustment,&nbsp;say it\u2019s the start of the school holidays and his routine is thrown&nbsp;off,&nbsp;or he\u2019s having a growth spurt&nbsp;\u2013 he can have challenging behaviours. He might disengage or throw something or try to hit out, and then he\u2019ll need extra therapy sessions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking back, I can see that paying for the extra therapy has helped Azuriah,&nbsp;but&nbsp;I&nbsp;shouldn\u2019t&nbsp;have to manage this on my own. He has an EHCP now,&nbsp;and&nbsp;to me, this is basic support. However, I don\u2019t think it goes far enough. He&nbsp;had&nbsp;started with speech therapy at his special school,&nbsp;but&nbsp;it has&nbsp;been reduced to almost nothing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Failures mean that parents often feel forced to pay for private assessments from professionals such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and education psychologists to evidence their child needs SEND support, and to fund extra therapies to bridge the gaps. Azuriah has his pinky finger on his mothers bottom lip.\" class=\"wp-image-82121\" \/ style=\"object-position: 50% 50%;\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nataile-and-Azariah-2-1024x510.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nataile-and-Azariah-2-600x299.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nataile-and-Azariah-2-768x382.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nataile-and-Azariah-2-500x249.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Nataile-and-Azariah-2.jpg 1213w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-title-primary\">The system needs to be fixed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It\u2019s&nbsp;a constant battle with countless disruptions, and&nbsp;I don\u2019t want him to regress.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I want to do everything I can to support Azuriah\u2019s learning&nbsp;but&nbsp;putting so much of the&nbsp;financial&nbsp;burden&nbsp;on&nbsp;disabled families like mine because the SEND system is failing is&nbsp;just plain&nbsp;wrong&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<strong>the system&nbsp;needs to be fixed.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;work full-time,&nbsp;and I&nbsp;can\u2019t&nbsp;work during school holidays because I need to look after Azuriah since there are no holiday clubs that meet his needs. For the year before he started at his special school, I couldn\u2019t work at all because he was only in school for an hour and a half&nbsp;\u2013 it was crazy \u2013 and at any time I could be called in to collect him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Our research* shows that beyond the direct costs, many families are also losing income. Two in five parents (40%) we surveyed have had to reduce their working hours because appropriate support is not in place, while more than a third (35%) have left their job altogether.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sometimes it feels as if you need to be rich to be disabled.<\/strong>&nbsp;The SEND reforms need to make sure the system is properly funded, so every disabled child can access the therapies they need from a very early age.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-arrow-primary\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;the&nbsp;upcoming reforms, we\u2019re calling for&nbsp;adequate funding&nbsp;for the SEND system&nbsp;and&nbsp;robust legal rights for disabled children,&nbsp;with&nbsp;properly&nbsp;joined-up&nbsp;support between education,&nbsp;health&nbsp;and social care professionals so&nbsp;that&nbsp;EHCPs work properly.
