It\u2019s not a formal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/communication\/sign-language\/\">sign language<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Makaton signs are based on the signs used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/communication\/sign-language\/#bsl\">British Sign Language<\/a>, the language of the Deaf community in the UK.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Makaton signs, unlike BSL, are used in the same grammatical order as spoken English, and together with speech. It\u2019s wonderful to see the huge smile on his face as he puts his heart and soul into performing the song \u2013 and to know he\u2019s not going to be isolated.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Anne, who supports Luca<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"invented\"><strong>Who invented Makaton?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10  align-right  size-medium\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Sense can help<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We offer free and impartial information about living with complex disabilities, including deafblindness. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/ask-us-for-help\/\">Get in touch by phone, email, post or through a BSL interpreter<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Makaton was first developed by a speech therapist named Margaret Walker in the 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was named using a few letters from the names of the first three Makaton teachers: Margaret Walker (MA), Katherine Johnston (KA) and Tony Cornforth (TON).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symbols were first added to the Makaton programme in the 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"differences\"><strong>Differences between Makaton and BSL<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>BSL is an officially recognised language. Makaton is not.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BSL is the language of the Deaf community. Makaton is a form of signing mostly used by hearing people who have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/conditions\/learning-disabilities\/\">learning disabilities<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/conditions\/autism\/\">autism<\/a> or different communication needs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Makaton, words are used in spoken word order. BSL has its own syntax and word order that is different to spoken language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are regional differences in BSL. Makaton uses the same signs across the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-secondary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tips\"><strong>Top tips for using Makaton<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Practise using the signs and symbols as much and as often as you can.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always speak as you sign or use symbols.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hold eye contact, and use facial expressions while signing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Try to use short, clear sentences.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your young person doesn\u2019t want to sign, you could try helping them to move their hands in an encouraging way. But go at their pace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be patient, gentle and persistent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most of all, enjoy it! Learning should be fun and creative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"learn\"><strong>How to learn Makaton<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to learn Makaton is by training with The Makaton Charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They offer workshops for parents, carers and whoever else wants to learn. <a href=\"https:\/\/makaton.org\/TMC\/Learn_Makaton\/Find_Training.aspx?WebsiteKey=2d2ed83b-15c1-4b7f-b237-8ca41598fd50\">Find Makaton training in your area.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you prefer to learn at your own pace, you could also <a href=\"https:\/\/makaton.org\/TMC\/Membership\/TMC\/Membership\/Core_Membership.aspx?hkey=b759c330-f716-4b4f-82f3-60d1a7a65dc3\">become a member of The Makaton Charity<\/a>. This gives you access to online resources and tutorials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vocabulary\"><strong>The Core Vocabulary<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Everybody starts learning Makaton by learning the Core Vocabulary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Core Vocabulary is a collection of 450 signs and symbols that represent everyday life concepts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is presented in stages, which get gradually more complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/makaton.org\/TMC\/SHOP\/Starting_out__Core_vocabulary_.aspx\">Visit The Makaton Charity for a range of Core Vocabulary resources<\/a>, including Welsh language versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"training\"><strong>Makaton training<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Makaton training is offered in levels, from level 1 to level 4.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best way to start learning Makaton is with level 1 training. You\u2019ll learn with other people, receive feedback on your signing and symbol work, share your experiences and practise with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With level 1 training, you\u2019ll also meet and build a relationship with a Makaton tutor, who can help and support you in the future. The Makaton Charity has more than 1,000 licensed professional Makaton tutors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve completed level 1, you can continue to level 2, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you already
