needs and disabilities, or you think they may have, getting support as early as possible will give the best outcomes for their education and development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"What\">What are early years setting?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Early years settings are settings for children under five include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Childminders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Day nurseries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pre-schools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Holiday play schemes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Childcare in your own home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"SENDCo\">Early years settings that get government funding should have a special educational needs and disabilities coordinator (SENDCo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SENDCo is a teacher who should make sure all the children with SEND get the support they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their role includes making sure you are closely involved with decisions regarding your child\u2019s progress and intervention, liaising with outside professionals, advising and supporting early years staff on implementing the SEND code of practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"who\">Who do I talk to if I think my child has SEND?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think your child may have SEND, you can talk to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>The special educational needs coordinator (SENDCo) in your child\u2019s nursery or pre-school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A doctor, health adviser or any professionals involved with your child\u2019s medical or social care.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your child isn\u2019t in a nursery, pre-school or childminders, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\">get in touch with your local council<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"support\">What SEN support is available in the early years?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SEN support for children under five includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>A written progress check when your child is two years old.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A child health visitor carrying out a health check when your child is aged two to three.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A written assessment in the summer term of your child\u2019s first year of primary school.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reasonable adjustments for children with a disability, such as providing aids like tactile signs (signs using touch).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what-if\">What if my child needs a lot more support?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If your child needs more support than early years setting can normally provide, there are different options:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Your child may need an&nbsp;education, health and care needs assessment, which may lead to an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/childhood-and-school\/send-education-special-education-needs-disabilities\/education-health-and-care-plans\/\">education, health and care plan<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They may be referred to specialists such as educational psychologists or speech and language therapists.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In some areas, you may be able to use a home-visiting education service called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.portage.org.uk\">portage<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your child has complex SEND, they may be offered a place in a specialist nursery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your local authority has a duty to make sure there are enough early years options for all families in the area who need it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They must help you to find one that is right for your family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"eyfs\">The EYFS framework<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Nurseries, playgroups and childminders registered with Ofsted follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/early-years-foundation-stage-framework--2\">the&nbsp;Early Years Foundation Stage&nbsp;(EYFS) framework<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EYFS framework makes sure that early years providers can identify and support children with disabilities and children who have, or may have, SEND and medical conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using the EYFS framework, early years settings continually observe and review how your child is learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your views as a parent play an important part in this.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-secondary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>The framework includes two formal reviews:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>At age two, looking at language and communication, and physical, personal, social and emotional development.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At age five, looking at literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stages\">Getting SEN support in early years settings<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The approach to supporting children with SEND in early years settings has four stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Assess<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The early years setting, together with the SENDCo and parents, work to explore the cause of any learning difficulties or delays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Staff should talk to you about your child and any extra help you think they need. If necessary, they\u2019ll ask for more information if needed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, they may ask an educational psychologist to visit and advise them on how to help your child.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There should be a written plan setting out this support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Do<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on your child\u2019s needs, they may receive extra help, to learn language skills, for example, from an adult or in a small group.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes, a specialist may work with your child directly or set up a programme and train staff to follow it. For example, if your child has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/conditions\/deafblindness\/\">multi-sensory impairments<\/a>, an MSI specialist teacher can work with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4.
