But legally, all young people must be in education or training until 18.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should be able to choose further education or training that matches your interests and abilities. You shouldn\u2019t be pushed into something that isn\u2019t right for you. Start planning early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It isn\u2019t always easy to get the information you need from people with the right expertise, so allow plenty of time to research your choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have an EHC plan, post-16 options should be discussed as early as possible in your reviews as part of your transition planning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Post-16, you\u2019re not entitled to full-time education and some college courses may only be part-time. But with an EHC plan, your local authority should consider whether full-time education will suit your needs better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"post-16\">What education means post-16<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Education post-16 can take many different forms, including a mix of study and workplace experience, or voluntary work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can mean you\u2019re studying for formal qualifications or work, or it can just mean you\u2019re taking some steps towards a skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of it may be funded by social care. Home tuition may also play a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It isn\u2019t always easy to get a tailored package in place, but your LA should help with this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>Note, post-16 education <strong>does not<\/strong> mean you have to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Be at school or college<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Work towards qualifications or employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be in full-time education or study\/train for a set number of hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have just one provider<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"options\">Your options post-16<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Staying\">Staying at school<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul id=\"staying\" class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>You can move into the sixth form of your mainstream or special school or move to another school.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can study for academic or vocational qualifications, such as Business and Technology Education Council qualifications (BTECs), A levels and T levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your SEND support will carry on if you need it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Mainstream\">Going to a mainstream further education (FE) college<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>You can study a wide range of courses, including:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Academic courses: GCSEs and A levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vocational courses, such as BTECs and T levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stepping-stone courses in Maths and English.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Courses that combine study with on-the-job training or work experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Life skills courses to help you prepare for all aspects of adult life.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many courses are part-time, for example, three days a week.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A mainstream college should supply standard SEN support, in a similar way to schools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You and your family should ask about a college\u2019s SEN provision, to make sure it has what it should offer. A mainstream college should also provide other support it can reasonably supply.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to get information about mainstream further education colleges<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>You can get information about colleges from your school and the discussion should be part of your annual EHC plan review.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can also check the post-16 section of your local authority\u2019s Local Offer site. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/nationalcareers.service.gov.uk\/\">The&nbsp;National Careers Service<\/a>&nbsp;might also be useful. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s the process if my child has an Education, Health and Care plan?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>If you\u2019re going to college, this should be discussed as part of your annual review if you have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/childhood-and-school\/send-education-special-education-needs-disabilities\/education-health-and-care-plans\/\">education, health and care plan (EHC plan)<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Once you\u2019ve chosen your college, your school should work with the new setting to ensure a smooth transition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deadline for the local authority to name the new college for entry in September is 31 March.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can mainstream further education colleges refuse a young person with SEND without an EHCP?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>No, colleges should not refuse to admit a young person with SEND who doesn\u2019t have an EHC plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, young people who need more help than a mainstream further education college can normally provide will need&nbsp;an EHC plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-secondary-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What support is available at mainstream further education colleges?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Mainstream further education colleges support students with SEND in a similar way to schools.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This includes following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/send-code-of-practice-0-to-25\">the SEND code of practice: 0\u201325 years<\/a>. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There should be a named person in overall charge of SEND support.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The college must make sure that students with SEND know who this is and where to go for help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Support might include:<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accessible information, such as symbol-based materials. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentoring.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/communication\/assistive-technology\/\">Assistive technology<\/a>, specialist tuition or note-takers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>One-to-one and small group learning support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to therapies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing and independent living training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colleges should refer to specialist services for further advice and support, for example, from education psychologists.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under the Equality Act 2010, mainstream further education colleges must also do everything they reasonably can to remove all the barriers to learning for disabled students.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will I have a SEND support plan?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Yes, any extra help you receive should be set out fully in a SEND support plan.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The college should involve you in planning your support and keep records of the extra support given and progress made.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This should be reviewed at least three times a year with you and, where appropriate, the family.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"specialist-fe\">Going to a specialist further education college<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>A specialist further education college only provides education for young people with SEND.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some specialist colleges have residential facilities and provide a waking day or 24-hour curriculum.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some specialist colleges help their students to attend courses in mainstream colleges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You need an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/childhood-and-school\/send-education-special-education-needs-disabilities\/education-health-and-care-plans\/\">EHC plan<\/a> to go to a specialist college. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can ask the local authority to name the specialist college you want to go to in your EHC plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The local authority may refuse your request on the grounds of cost. You may need to show that there are no cheaper education options are available.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/childhood-and-school\/send-education-special-education-needs-disabilities\/challenging-decisions-appeals-and-tribunals\/\">Read more about challenging decisions, appeals and tribunals.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Mixing\">Mixing education and other activities<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Education for young people post-16 can include a mixture of college-based learning and other activities such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Work experience<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Volunteering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Independent travel training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Self-help skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/adult-life-and-planning-for-your-future\/who-pays-for-your-care-and-support\/\">Some of this support may be funded by adult social care.<\/a> Your local authority is responsible for social care. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block  slab    is-style-textured-secondary-tint-10  align-full\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">  <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"other\">Other post-16 options<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Home-based tuition or therapy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can\u2019t go to a college because you have complex needs or because you\u2019ve been out of formal education for a long time, you may be able to get home-based tuition or therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your local authority may fund home-based tuition or therapy if you have an EHC plan, if they agree this is the only way to meet your special educational needs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your local authority should give you support and advice on this, including advice about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/adult-life-and-planning-for-your-future\/personal-budgets\/\">personal budgets<\/a>, if appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Training and apprenticeships<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You can gain experience of the workplace in a traineeship or apprenticeship. These can help you get qualifications and find work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/adult-life-and-planning-for-your-future\/finding-work\/\">Find out more information about finding employment.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block  slab    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10  align-full\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">  <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"post-18\">Your options post-18<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"Higher\">Higher education<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have the right qualifications, you may be able to get onto a degree-level (higher education) course at a university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your EHC plan ends when you go into higher education, but other support is available, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/adult-life-and-planning-for-your-future\/who-pays-for-your-care-and-support\/\">Disabled Students Allowance<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Universities have duties under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments for disabled students, including flexible seminar times, support for study skills or access to specialist computer software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your school or college will be able to tell you more about applying for higher education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other post-18 options<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019re 18, you\u2019re classed as an adult learner and can\u2019t usually stay on at school. But some special schools have further education provision for young people aged 19 to 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can move on to a mainstream further education college or, if you have an EHC plan, a <a href=\"#specialist-fe\">specialist further education college<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be able to keep your EHC plan if you move to a social care setting, such as an adult residential or day care setting.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Find out more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a lot to think about so get the support you need to make decisions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as thinking about it with your parents, your school and local authority should be able to help.
