And not everyone with disabilities has SEN.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"needs\"><strong>What are special educational needs?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All children may have difficulties learning at some stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most children, the challenges can be overcome with support from home and teachers at school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if your child has special educational needs and\/or disabilities, they are likely to need extra support, or support in a different way, to make sure they are able to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your child may have SEN because of a diagnosed medical condition or a disability. Or they may have SEN without a diagnosis or disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2014\/6\/contents\">the law<\/a>, a child has SEND if \u201cthey have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"provision\"><strong>What is \u201cspecial educational provision\u201d?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Special educational provision is anything provided in education or training that\u2019s extra to, or different from, what other people might need at the same age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Having materials provided in a larger text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receiving one-to-one support in the classroom.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/communication\/sign-language\/\">Communicating through sign language<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Special educational provision also refers to any health and social care provision that teaches young people. For example, speech and language therapy might be a kind of special educational provision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All education offered to children under two years old is considered special educational provision.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-do-i-know\"><strong>How do I know if my child has SEN or SEND?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your child has special educational needs (SEN) if they have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Much greater difficulty learning something than most others of the same age, or;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A disability that makes it difficult for them to use the facilities that others of the same age use in mainstream schools or educational settings for young people aged 16-25.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your child has special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) if they have either or both of the above, and\/or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>A physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term negative effect on their ability to carry out normal, day-to-day activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the definition of disability according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/definition-of-disability-under-equality-act-2010\">The Equality Act 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSubstantial\u201d means it\u2019s not a minor difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLong-term\u201d means that the impact has lasted, or could be expected to last for 12 months or more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your child doesn\u2019t need to have a medical diagnosis to have SEN or SEND.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"examples\"><strong>Examples of SEND<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some reasons that children might have SEND include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Sensory impairments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mobility difficulties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Epilepsy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cerebral palsy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Autism, ADHD or another form of neurodivergence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learning difficulties such as dyslexia or dyscalculia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block  slab    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10  align-full\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">  <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"four-areas\">The four areas of SEND<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"A young white woman in a wheelchair in the corridor of her Sense College.\" class=\"wp-image-61886\" style=\"width:491px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-533x800.jpg 533w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-500x750.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-1067x1600.jpg 1067w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-600x900.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Sense-Loughborough-Final-Selection-Annie-4-scaled.jpg 1707w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 683px) 100vw, 683px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The government\u2019s SEND code of practice describes four key areas of need for children with SEND.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A child with SEND might have difficulties in any one or more of the following four areas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li><strong>Social, emotional and mental health. <\/strong>This category includes children who are struggling with any social or emotional problems that are impacting their ability to learn. This could include mental health problems like anxiety.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cognition and learning.<\/strong> These children might find it harder to learn things like reading and writing, for example. This category includes learning difficulties like dyslexia and dyscalculia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication and interaction. <\/strong>Autistic children, for example, may face difficulties interacting with others in the classroom.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Physical and sensory needs.<\/strong> This category includes sensory impairments like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/conditions\/deafness-and-hearing-loss\/\">D\/deafness<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/conditions\/blindness-and-visual-impairment\/\">blindness<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/conditions\/deafblindness\/\">deafblindness<\/a>, mobility issues and other medical needs.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"code-of-practice\"><strong>The SEND code of practice: your rights to support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The SEND code of practice sets out guidance for how schools should support students with SEND.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It makes clear that nurseries, schools and colleges are required to identify students\u2019 SEN and make sure that they have the support they need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the SEND code of practice, your child might be eligible for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li><strong>SEN support <\/strong>\u2013 support provided by a nursery, school or college, such as extra help from a teaching assistant or working in a smaller group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/childhood-and-school\/send-education-special-education-needs-disabilities\/education-health-and-care-plans\/\"><strong>An education, health and care plan (EHCP)<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 a plan of care and support for children and young people aged 0- 25 with more complex needs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The support your child receives will depend on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li><strong>Your Local Offer<\/strong> \u2013 the information your local authority provides about what support is available for children with SEND in your area.
