information and support<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whatissafeguarding\"><strong>What is safeguarding?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Safeguarding is about protecting the health, wellbeing and human rights of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Children.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Young people.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Disabled adults with complex needs or learning disabilities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes protecting your right to live in safety, free from <strong>abuse<\/strong> and <strong>neglect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"choices\">Making your own choices about safeguarding&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are a disabled adult with complex needs or learning difficulties, safeguarding is also about\u00a0you being independent and making your own choices.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This idea can be summed up as: no decision about me, without me.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find out to making sure you are involved in decisions<\/a>&nbsp;about your safeguarding, as well as our policies, procedures and training, including guidance for Sense staff and volunteers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"abuse\"><a><\/a>What is abuse?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Abuse is when someone hurts you or treats you badly.&nbsp;This might happen once or&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;times.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abuse is always wrong&nbsp;and should not happen.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If someone uses verbal abuse, intimidation or threats, or harasses or assaults you, or damages your property because of your disability, race, gender, gender identity, age, sexual orientation or religion, this is known as a hate crime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should report a hate crime to the police.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"whatshould\"><a><\/a>What should I do if I think I am being abused or neglected?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you are being abused or neglected, you can&nbsp;tell:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Someone in your family.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A friend or neighbour.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A manager at work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A member of staff at work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A nurse or social worker.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A GP or other doctor.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A teacher.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A support group or organisation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/get-support\/information-and-advice\/safeguarding-and-keeping-safe\/#FurtherInformationAndSupport\">see&nbsp;further information and support&nbsp;below<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\">Your local council\u2019s&nbsp;safeguarding team<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The police, if it\u2019s a crime, for example&nbsp;assault,&nbsp;sexual abuse, stealing,&nbsp;fraud&nbsp;and&nbsp;hate crime&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;or ask someone you trust to help you to speak to&nbsp;the&nbsp;police.&nbsp;If you are in immediate danger, call 999.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers should make sure they do not give jobs to people who might hurt or abuse disabled people with complex needs or learning disabilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They should carry out checks, for example with the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/disclosure-and-barring-service\">Disclosure and Barring Service<\/a>, to find out whether new staff have abused anyone before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"howcanitell\"><a><\/a>How can I tell if someone else is being abused or neglected?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The signs are not always the same but&nbsp;pay attention if the person:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Has become quieter&nbsp;and&nbsp;withdrawn from activities, contact or communication.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has lost weight or appears&nbsp;underfed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doesn\u2019t appear to be washing regularly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often seems to be wearing dirty clothes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seems like they might not be getting their medication&nbsp;\u2013 regularly or at all.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seems&nbsp;to be struggling with money or has&nbsp;no money.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has&nbsp;cuts, bruises or injuries that can\u2019t be explained.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shows&nbsp;changes in their&nbsp;behaviour.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Has&nbsp;changed sleeping patterns.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"ithinksomeone\"><a><\/a>What&nbsp;should&nbsp;I do if I&nbsp;think someone is being abused or neglected?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You should start by talking to the person:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Let them know that you\u2019ve noticed a change and that you\u2019re concerned.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Listen to them and remain calm, even you\u2019re upset by what you hear.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be patient \u2013 they may not want to talk or may be scared.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t&nbsp;promise that you won\u2019t tell anyone what you\u2019ve heard, even if they ask you to. If&nbsp;they\u2019re&nbsp;being&nbsp;abused&nbsp;or neglected,&nbsp;you must&nbsp;seek help from others as soon as possible.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make it clear that they have a right to feel safe&nbsp;and that what\u2019s happening to them is wrong.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You should then report your concerns and what you\u2019ve been told to someone&nbsp;responsible&nbsp;for safeguarding:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>If the person is receiving services from&nbsp;Sense, follow the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/get-support\/information-and-advice\/safeguarding-and-keeping-safe\/#resources\">Sense Safeguarding Procedure in the downloadable document section<\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;contact&nbsp;the&nbsp;service&nbsp;manager, operational manager, Director of Operations or Head of Safeguarding.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For people not using Sense services,&nbsp;contact&nbsp;the person\u2019s GP or&nbsp;a&nbsp;social worker, teacher, nurse,&nbsp;support worker, other professional or support group or organisation.&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/get-support\/information-and-advice\/safeguarding-and-keeping-safe\/#FurtherInformationAndSupport\">See&nbsp;further information and support<\/a>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\">Their&nbsp;local council\u2019s&nbsp;safeguarding team<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The police, if you think&nbsp;a crime has been committed and&nbsp;the person is at immediate risk.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"communicating\"><a><\/a>Communicating with someone who might have been abused or neglected&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&nbsp;have to&nbsp;communicate with someone who might have been abused or neglected, remember to use their preferred method of
