By feeling the pins move, the visually impaired person can read in braille.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A number of devices are now available:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Braillant BI 40.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Orbit Reader.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Braille Me.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BrailleSensePolaris.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>BrailleNote Touch.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>iniseOne.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blitlab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To use a braille display, you usually need to have a braille translation software, to translate the documents you\u2019re reading into braille.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"brailletranslationsoftware\"><strong>Braille translation software<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The most commonly used braille translation software is Duxbury Braille Translator. It is available in the UK from the <a href=\"https:\/\/shop.rnib.org.uk\/duxbury-braille-translator-software\">RNIB<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sightandsound.co.uk\/product\/duxbury-braille-translator\/\">Sight and Sound Technology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visionaid.co.uk\/duxbury-braille-translator\">Vision Aid<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"screenreaders\"><strong>Screen readers<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are blind or have very limited vision, screen readers can help you to use digital technology to explore the internet and use apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly all computers, tablets and smartphones now have built-in screen readers. You can purchase more advanced screen readers to get access to more features.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"what\"><strong>What are screen readers?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Screen readers are a type of software that read text aloud, so that people with visual impairments can hear it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how\"><strong>How do screen readers work?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Screen readers use a synthesised voice to read aloud what\u2019s on your screen. Most people use keyboard shortcuts, or gestures on their mouse pad, to control what is being read aloud and use a screen reader to skim through content quickly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can adapt them to suit your needs, for example, by changing the language and speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re starting out with a screen reader, you\u2019ll need to learn some keyboard shortcuts or touch gestures. It takes time and practice to become confident with using a screen reader. You might want to get some training.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more about <a href=\"http:\/\/abilitynet.org.uk\/at-home\/request-free-it-support-home\">home support and training from AbilityNet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"available\"><strong>What screen readers are available?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The most popular screen readers are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li><strong>JAWS (Job Access With Speech) for Windows: <\/strong>This paid-for desktop screen reader works well with Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.freedomscientific.com\/Downloads\/JAWS\">Get a 40-minute trial version of JAWS.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>NVDA (Non Visual Desktop Access):<\/strong> This free, open-source screen reader for Windows computers works well with all popular browsers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nvaccess.org\/download\/\">Download NVDA here.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Narrator for Windows: <\/strong>Narrator is the screen reader built into Windows. This works well with Microsoft Office and the Edge Browser. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/windows\/complete-guide-to-narrator-e4397a0d-ef4f-b386-d8ae-c172f109bdb1\">You can find the Microsoft Narrator training guide here.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>VoiceOver: <\/strong>VoiceOver is the built-in screen reader for Apple\u2019s Mac computers, iPads, iPhones, the Apple Watch and the Apple TV. It is very popular on the iPhone, working well with millions of apps and the internet, using the Apple browser Safari. You don\u2019t need to install VoiceOver. On your Apple device, just go to settings and click or tap on Accessibility to find VoiceOver and other options.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TalkBack for Android Devices: <\/strong>Found on Android devices, TalkBack is widely used. It works well with most apps and the internet using the Chrome browser. You don\u2019t need to download TalkBack on most Android devices. On some, you will have to install it from the Google Play Store. To enable TalkBack, go to your device\u2019s settings and tap on Accessibility. On some devices, TalkBack may be called Voice Assistant or Accessibility Suite. TalkBack works best on phones from Google or Samsung. Get a helpful overview of <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/accessibility\/android\/answer\/6006564?hl=en-GB\">Android accessibility settings and apps.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>VoiceView for the Amazon Fire tablet: <\/strong>The VoiceView screen reader lets you use gestures to navigate your Amazon Fire tablet (FireOS 5 and higher) and use speech output for content. There are other options.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"onscreen\"><strong>Onscreen keyboards<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Onscreen keyboards are standard on most tablets and smartphones. Speak first to your GP, optometrist or ophthalmologist for a referral for a low vision assessment at your local eye hospital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the assessment, a qualified low vision practitioner will check your vision and decide whether low vision aids such as magnifiers are right for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They may recommend different magnifiers for different tasks. You can use these for specific areas of a room.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use timers to light certain areas automatically at specific times, e.g. set your bedroom light to switch on ten minutes before you go to bed, or your hallway and living room lights for ten minutes before you get home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are less mobile, you can use a remote control, your smartphone or other smart home devices to control your lighting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid shiny, high-gloss kitchen units or other furniture, as light can bounce off these and distract you.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tasklighting\"><strong>Task lighting<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Use task lights, such as adjustable lamps, for activities such as reading and writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best position for an adjustable lamp is below your eye level, between you and what you want to look at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This reduces the amount of glare you experience when doing close work.
