This page is mostly about how to arrange respite care for disabled adults \u2013 <a href=\"#child\">see more information on short breaks for disabled children<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how\"><strong>How to get respite care&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How to arrange respite care depends on where you live, and how you pay for it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might choose to fund respite care, such as a short stay in a residential home, yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In some areas, you might be offered some respite care from your local authority after your <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/support-for-carers\/carers-assessments\/\">carer\u2019s assessment<\/a><\/strong>. This might be fully or partly funded.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might also be able to access fully or partly funded respite care via charities or local organisations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pays\"><strong>Who pays for respite care?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"la\"><strong>Your local authority<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Depending on where you live, you might be offered respite care from your local authority as the result of either a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/support-for-carers\/carers-assessments\/\">carer\u2019s assessment<\/a> <\/strong>or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/adult-life-and-planning-for-your-future\/assessments-for-care-and-support-if-youre-disabled\/\">needs assessment<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as these assessments, the council should also carry out a financial assessment, to work out how much you can afford to pay towards the support you need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the financial assessment shows that you can\u2019t afford to cover the costs yourself, you should be offered help from the council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be offered help in the form of fully or partially funded respite care.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be offered support in the form of a personal budget, which can be paid as direct payments. If this is the case, you can use the money to arrange respite care for yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/benefits-and-money\/who-pays-for-your-care-and-support\/personal-budgets-and-direct-payments\/\">Find out more about personal budgets and direct payments.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"own\"><strong>Paying for your own respite care<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If the council finds that you can afford to pay for respite care, then you may have to fund it yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, even if you don\u2019t think you will qualify for financial support, you should still ask for a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/support-for-carers\/carers-assessments\/\">carer\u2019s assessment<\/a> <\/strong>and\/or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/adult-life-and-planning-for-your-future\/assessments-for-care-and-support-if-youre-disabled\/\">needs assessment<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your local authority will still offer guidance on local support that\u2019s suitable for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"charity\"><strong>Charitable sources<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be able to get free respite care, or money towards the cost of respite care, from a charitable organisation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/benefits-and-money\/benefits-and-financial-help-if-youre-a-disabled-adult\/grants-for-disabled-people\/\">Find out more about charitable grants for disabled people.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#sense\">See respite care options from Sense.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"child\"><strong>How to get respite care for a child<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of getting respite care for disabled children is slightly different than for adults.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"localoffer\"><strong>Find your Local Offer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your local authority must publish information about all the services and support available to children with special educational needs and disabilities in your area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is called the Local Offer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Local Offer should include information about short breaks services for disabled children.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find a Local Offer by searching for \u2018SEND\u2019 or \u2018Local Offer\u2019 on a local authority website or by searching for the area name and \u2018Local Offer\u2019 on Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/find-local-council\">Find your local authority.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"assessment\"><strong>Get a needs assessment for your child<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you think you need social care services, you can ask your council for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/life-stages\/adult-life-and-planning-for-your-future\/assessments-for-care-and-support-if-youre-disabled\/\">needs assessment<\/a> for your child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should do this by contacting your local authority\u2019s department for children with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your child doesn\u2019t need to have a medical diagnosis for you to ask for a needs assessment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You are entitled to a needs assessment if your child is a \u201cchild in need\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Can\u2019t achieve or maintain a certain level of health or development, or their health and development will suffer, if they don\u2019t get help from the local authority.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a disability (as defined by the Equality Act 2010).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/contact.org.uk\/help-for-families\/information-advice-services\/social-care\/how-to-access-services\/needs-assessments\/\">Find out more from Contact about asking for a needs assessment for a disabled child.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"howlong\"><strong>How long can respite care last?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Respite care can last for anything from a few hours to a few weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It depends on the kind of care you arrange. You might organise for a carer to come and take over from you for you for a day, or you might arrange for the person you care for to go on a week-long holiday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some rules about how long respite care can last if you receive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/benefits-and-money\/carer-benefits\/#carersallowance\">Carer\u2019s Allowance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"carersallowance\"><strong>Will a temporary break in caring affect my Carer\u2019s Allowance?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You can take short breaks from caring without impacting your Carer\u2019s Allowance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In general, you can take up to four weeks off in a six month period. But the rules are quite complicated. It\u2019s best to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/carers-allowance-unit\">speak to the government\u2019s Carer\u2019s Allowance Unit for advice<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You must <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/carers-allowance\/further-information\">tell the Department for Work and Pensions<\/a> if the person you care for will be in respite care for more than 12 weeks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/benefits-and-money\/carer-benefits\/\">Find out more about Carer\u2019s Allowance.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block  slab    is-style-textured-primary-tint-10  align-full\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">  <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sense\"><strong>Sense short breaks and respite services<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sense is here for people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/information-and-advice\/conditions\/what-does-complex-disabilities-mean\/\">complex disabilities<\/a> and for their families and carers, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our services give carers a break from caring, while also giving people with complex disabilities the opportunity to build confidence, make friends and express themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also offer services for siblings, young carers, parents and families around the UK.
