He\u2019s blind and has a learning disability, which sometimes makes it hard for him to express himself and connect. That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s been&nbsp; great to see Chapman connect with his virtual buddy Gabby.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jerry is a Sense Virtual Buddying assistant. On the screen is a video call from a young woman long dark hair, this is Gabby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jerry: Through Sense, he has found true friendship.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabby starts clapping as Chapman&#8217;s piano piece comes to an end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby: Wow, Chapman, that was amazing!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chapman: Thank you, Gabriella.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapman is now sitting with the grand piano behind him. His head is lowered slightly as he speaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chapman: My buddy is Gabriella, she&#8217;s amazing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabby and Chapman are on a video call together, Gabby calling in from her bedroom at home while Chapman sits in his family living room. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chapman: I enjoy chatting and playing music with her.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabby stands in her room playing her flute, a scene that is visible on Chapman&#8217;s iPad. He plays the piano while listening to the flute over the video call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby: My very first session with Chapman, he was very shy and quiet. Going into it, I knew he was quite isolated. Most of his social interactions were with his family.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabby is speaking to camera from her room. Chapman sits at home, alone by the window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next shot, Chapman is sitting on the sofa with his dad, who pulls him close. They are smiling and jostling together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby: It was sort of my role to try and expose him to more relationships and to different people so that he can gain that confidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now the iPad showing Gabby, is balanced on a wooden organ in the family living room. Chapman is sat in front of the instrument but is not playing. He can Gabby are just chatting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby: To overcome some of those communication challenges with Chapman, we do a lot of music.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the video call, Gabby leads Chapman into song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gabby: Okay, well, we&#8217;re going to go ahead with the Tube song. Shall we start?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapman singing: Brixton, Barbican, Chorleywood, Amersham&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby: It was good that we had that link because then you can really see a bit more of his confidence come out, and then exploring and trying completely different things<\/strong> <strong>that he may have never done before, like baking<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the kitchen, Chapman stands at a counter whisking an egg in a bowl. He&#8217;s smiling and laughing while Gabby, via the iPad, talks him through the steps to baking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby: I can see how Chapman has grown and changed<\/strong> <strong>over the course of our sessions. He&#8217;s definitely come out of his shell and he&#8217;s more chatty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cutting away from Gabby talking to the camera and back to the kitchen, Gabby is instructing Chapman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby: Okay, yeah we&#8217;ll mix the eggs in a little bit.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chapman laughing: Oh, is this funny!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby: I think with the Sense Virtual Buddying friendship, it will just help him develop his confidence, building relationships with people, making connections&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapman and Gabby each play on a small xylophone during their video call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gabby:&#8230;and hopefully start to gain some independence so that he can realise that the world is his oyster and he just grow as a person.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A framed certificate in Chapman&#8217;s home shows that he won the &#8216;Sense Young Person of the Year&#8217; award in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapman, sitting with the grand piano behind him, speaks to camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chapman: I joined the Buddying programme for over one year now.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next shot, Chapman&#8217;s hands carefully raise the lid of the piano to reveal the keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chapman: If I can do it, you can do it too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapman plays the piano as the screen fades to white.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n\n<p>My son was born with a rare genetic condition. He\u2019s blind and has a speech disorder, learning difficulties and autism. It\u2019s been heart-breaking for us, as parents, to see the difficulties he\u2019s faced making friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We moved to the UK from Hong Kong in 2021, and found that it\u2019s a lot more inclusive here, with more activities that are accessible for Chapman. But the language barrier, on top of his speech disorder, made socialising hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His mum, Jing, and I signed him up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/our-services\/meeting-people\/virtual-buddying-befriending-service\/\">Sense\u2019s Virtual Buddying programme<\/a>. We wanted to give Chapman an opportunity to build a relationship with someone at his own pace and in his own way. We\u2019d tried group activities with other disabled children, but they tended to be a one-off \u201chi and bye\u201d. It was difficult to bond, to have a meaningful connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why it meant so much to us when Sense matched Chapman with his Buddy, Gabriella. She possessed the patience to engage with Chapman&#8217;s unique situation and his thought processes. In the safe and accepting space they shared, Chapman found someone who understood him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Gabriella found out that Chapman is a gifted piano player, she dusted off her flute to connect with him more closely. Before this, Chapman hardly ever played music with someone else \u2013 so it was astonishing when he and Gabriella started collaborating on songs together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something similar happened with maths, a subject Chapman has struggled with. We found that he liked to exercise his mathematical thinking by taking on very specific calculations. So, straightaway, Gabriella introduced games to their session&nbsp;that would keep Chapman practicing his newfound skills. The \u201cmaths game\u201d has become one of their favourite activities together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since spending time with his Buddy, Chapman is much happier to talk. Before, he was often too shy to speak, even in Cantonese. Now, he almost talks too much!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re really pleased with his progress. The sessions have built his social confidence and communication skills, as well as fostering his love of music. He\u2019s an incredibly gifted player. When he was just five years old, he taught himself how to play \u2018It\u2019s a Small World\u2019 from memory! He hadn\u2019t seen the sheet music; he\u2019d just heard the song on a trip to Disneyland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His mum and I don\u2019t know anything about music, but we realised early on that he had this skill. Through lessons and nationwide performances, he\u2019s continued to defy the odds stacked against him. Now, he can perform a piano recital for up to 45 minutes with over 20,000 notes, all without reading it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Piano has long been his passion, but, until Sense, it was something he did on his own, it hadn\u2019t help him overcome his isolation. Sense Buddying introduced a social element to this important part of his life, which has been wonderful. We\u2019re very proud of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think what we can all learn from Chapman is how valuable it is to step outside of your comfort zone and embrace new opportunities. This compares to just a quarter of the general population.
