Carers in Scotland might be eligible for the Carer Support Payment instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you might care for your disabled child, or for an elderly relative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Who can get Carer\u2019s Allowance?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You can claim Carer\u2019s Allowance if you care for someone for at least 35 hours per week. You must also earn less than \u00a3196 per week.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n  <div class=\"wp-block  box    is-style-textured-grey-tint-10\">    <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<p>The government has recently announced that the earnings threshold for carers will be increasing to \u00a3196. This change will come into effect in April 2025.<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>The person you\u2019re caring for must receive a relevant benefit. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.turn2us.org.uk\/Benefit-guides\/Carer-s-Allowance\/Who-can-get-Carer-s-Allowance\">Find out more about which benefits qualify on the Turn2Us website.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>You do not have to be related to, or live with, the person you care for.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You do not get paid more if you care for more than one person.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If someone else also cares for the same person as you, only one of you can claim Carer\u2019s Allowance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ll have to pay tax on Carer\u2019s Allowance if your income is over your Personal Allowance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For each week you get Carer\u2019s Allowance, you automatically get\u202fNational Insurance credits.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you live in Scotland and receive Carer&#8217;s Allowance or Carer Support Payment, you can also get an additional benefit called Carer&#8217;s Allowance Supplement. This is paid twice a year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mygov.scot\/carers-allowance-supplement\">Find out more about Carer&#8217;s Allowance Supplement.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How much is Carer\u2019s Allowance?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The weekly rate for Carer\u2019s Allowance is \u00a383.30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is Carer\u2019s Allowance means-tested?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No, Carer\u2019s Allowance is not means-tested. She told Sense, &#8220;Before starting any benefits application, it\u2019s a good idea to have all the information and evidence you need to hand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I always tell new parents of children with complex disabilities: get yourself a good filing system. Try to keep everything in order. It can make it feel a bit less overwhelming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;For me, it helps me cope to approach it almost like I\u2019m running a small business. I put my secretary head on. It gives me strength to deal with professionals like consultants \u2013 and to go through processes like the Carer\u2019s Allowance application process.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/blog\/how-to-claim-carers-allowance\/\">Read Yvette&#8217;s advice about applying for Carer&#8217;s Allowance.<\/a><\/p>\n\n<\/div>\n  <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How Carer\u2019s Allowance works with other benefits<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You won\u2019t get Carer\u2019s Allowance, or you\u2019ll get a reduced amount, if you have some other benefits, including:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/state-pension\">State retirement pension<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/employment-support-allowance\">Contributory Employment and Support Allowance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/jobseekers-allowance\">Contribution-based Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/maternity-allowance\">Maternity Allowance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If your Carer\u2019s Allowance is either the same as or less than the other benefit, you will get the other benefit rather than Carer\u2019s Allowance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the other benefit is less than your Carer\u2019s Allowance, you will get the other benefit and the balance of your Carer\u2019s Allowance on top.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rules around this can be confusing. To figure out whether it\u2019s best for you to make a claim or not, it could be helpful to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/about-us\/contact-us\/contact-us\/contact-us\/\">speak to Citizens Advice<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/carers-allowance\/effect-on-other-benefits\">Find out more about how Carer\u2019s Allowance impacts other benefits.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Skip ahead to find out <a href=\"#carersuniversalcredit\">how Carer\u2019s Allowance might impact Universal Credit and other means-tested benefits<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"universalcredit\"><strong>Universal Credit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Universal Credit is a monthly payment to support living costs. It\u2019s available for people on low incomes in lots of different circumstances. It\u2019s replacing the following benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-primary-bullets\">\n<li>Child Tax Credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing Benefit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Income Support.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Income-based Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance (JSA).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Working Tax Credit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you already receive any of these benefits, you don\u2019t need to do anything. The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will contact you if you\u2019re being moved to Universal Credit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re not already receiving any of these benefits, you might want to consider applying for Universal Credit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/universal-credit\/eligibility\">Find out more about who is eligible for Universal Credit.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"carerelement\"><strong>Carer element of Universal Credit<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you claim Universal Credit and you care for someone for more than 35 hours per week, you can also get the <strong>carer element<\/strong> of Universal Credit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an additional amount that\u2019s paid on top of your Universal Credit payment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How much is the carer element?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In the financial year 2025-2026, the carer element is worth \u00a3201.68&nbsp;a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"carersuniversalcredit\"><strong>Does Carer\u2019s Allowance affect Universal Credit?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. If you\u2019re applying for Universal Credit, and you receive Carer\u2019s Allowance, your Carer\u2019s Allowance will count as part of your income.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Universal Credit is a means-tested benefit, this means you will get less of it if you receive Carer\u2019s Allowance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you\u2019ll be better off overall depends on your circumstances. You could <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/about-us\/contact-us\/contact-us\/contact-us\/\">speak to Citizens Advice<\/a> for guidance, or <a href=\"https:\/\/benefits-calculator.turn2us.org.uk\/\">use the benefits calculator from Turn2Us<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"carerspremium\"><strong>Carers\u2019 Premium or Carers\u2019 Addition<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the Carers\u2019 Premium?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you get Carer\u2019s Allowance, you can get an extra amount called a <strong>Carers\u2019 Premium<\/strong> added to any of the following benefits:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list is-style-secondary-bullets\">\n<li>Pension Credit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/jobseekers-allowance\">Income-based Jobseeker\u2019s Allowance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/employment-support-allowance\">Income-related Employment and Support Allowance<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/income-support\">Income Support<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Housing Benefit.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Council Tax Support (England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland uses a rates system).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When it\u2019s added to Pension Credit, it\u2019s called a <strong>Carers\u2019 Addition<\/strong>. This means the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rules can be complicated. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/benefits\/sick-or-disabled-people-and-carers\/carers-allowance\/\">For help and more information contact Citizens Advice.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"carerscredit\"><strong>Carer\u2019s Credit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you care for someone for at least 20 hours a week, you might be able to get <strong>Carer\u2019s Credit<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Carer\u2019s Credit?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Carer\u2019s Credit is a National Insurance credit that fills gaps in your National Insurance record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that you can take on caring responsibilities without risking your State Pension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/carers-credit\">Visit gov.uk to find out more about Carer\u2019s Credit.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block  slab    is-style-textured-secondary-tint-10  align-full\">\n  <div class=\"wrap\">  <div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"benefits\">Benefits for the person you support<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to make sure the person you support is getting what they\u2019re entitled to.
